As an artist, Gary Bredendick’s intent is to engage the viewer with a sense of residing in a place. Nature’s beauty can provide an interlude of quiet contemplation and reflection, offering us perspective, serenity, and optimism about our lives. Everyday challenges become momentarily subordinate to the realm of calm and tranquility found in nature. Using a variety of special brushes and techniques for effect, texture, tonal hues, and value are used to create a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective in his work.Over the years, he has explored using pastels, wet-on-wet watercolor, and air-brushed watercolor to convey the atmospheric light and perspective of the Midwestern skies. Once he was able to devote his attention to painting full-time in retirement, he switched back to working with oil on canvas. It was a rekindled love of the medium from many years ago as an undergraduate student.

Joan Bredendick relies on the transparent nature of the watercolor by using multi-layered glazes of paint to achieve rich color saturation and deep value contrast. As a watercolor painter venturing into colored pencil work, she is amazed at the similarities between the mediums in the transparent layering necessary to achieve depth and richness of color and contrast. Both mediums are challenging to create an inviting surface glow. “I use watercolor paint without preconceptions of what a watercolor should look like. Paint is paint. Each painting or drawing tells a story. I provide the clues and the viewer adds their own interpretation to the narrative”
In the Bell Gallery, Amy Rundle has been an artist since the math pages of first grade, but on a serious platform for 20 years. She loves nature, architecture, animals, and country living. In her art, Amy prefers realism and keeps her colors, bright and clean. She has also won fair awards for her art of “Best dairy animal”.  Other ventures that keep Amy entertained are prop making, costuming for local theater productions, and decorating for different events. Amy gives all thanks to God above for her gift of art. With no school experience, she has been able to capture His beauty with her natural talent.

Beloit Art Center is located at 520 E. Grand Ave. in downtown Beloit.  The gallery is free and open to the public. Gallery and gift shop hours are Monday 10 am – 2 pm, Tuesday – Friday 10 am – 5 pm and Saturday 10 am – 2 pm. Be sure to visit beloitartcenter.com for information on upcoming classes and events.
