MARK LAJINESS| Main Gallery
ARTIST STATEMENT

I create hanging and freestanding sculpture from copper, stained glass, upcycled woods, and a variety of found objects. Recent materials I’ve incorporated into sculptures include:
  • Parts of a cello found on the side of a country road.
  • A slide projector from the 1960s.
  • Middle school trombones no longer playable.
  • Cups and vases found in thrift stores.
  • A grandfather’s hand drill.
I built lots of birds and fish, a huge variety of mammals (wolves, cats, bears, etc.), insects, humanoids (including angels, aliens, and gnomes), and hanging geometrical figures. My work is best displayed indoors, hanging down from a curtain rod or ceiling hook, and near a sunny window. Ideally, pieces would spin a little in a breeze.
My artistic influences include Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, Buckminster Fuller, Pablo Picasso and Isamu Noguchi.

About the Artist
Mark Lajiness is an artist and writer, currently living in Janesville. He has worked in Waldorf, Montessori and public schools, teaching English, drama and art to grades 4 – 12. In normal years, he participates in ten to twelve art fairs around the Midwest. His sculptural website is www.stellations.com.

PIERRE CHARLES | Bell Gallery
ARTIST STATEMENT

The featured artist in the Bell Gallery is Dr. Pierre Charles, a general surgeon who has practiced in the Beloit area for the past twenty-four years.  He took up painting recently as a form of relaxation and self-expression.  Because he has no formal training, he has teamed up with local artists to improve his skills. Dr. Charles has a broad range of interests which are reflected in his paintings.  Acrylics and oils on canvas and masonite are his preferred media.  He plans to continue painting and improving his technique while exploring other media and visual art forms.
