WVA offers a community and a support system to artists at any stage in their career. Because the organization is run by artists for artists, they are dedicated to the well- being and fair treatment of Wisconsin artists through the forging of creative partnerships, exhibition opportunities, monthly meetings, publications, programming, arts advocacy, and more. The South Central Chapter of WVA covers a broad portion of Wisconsin, from the Madison area, east to Watertown, south to Beloit, west to the Mississippi River and as far north as Eau Claire. In the Bell Gallery, Connie Gardiner’s artwork will be on display. A self taught artist, Gardiner points to her first show at Beloit Art Center in 2022 as the start of her growth and introduction to the art world. Recently retired, she looks forward to learning new techniques and developing her teaching, to bring the joy of being an artist to everyone. Looking for more art in the community? In the Sveum Gallery, artwork by Rockford Art Guild artists will be featured. The Rockford Art Guild was originally organized in 1955 by 11 artists whose interest was to have a group of fellow artists to get together on a regular basis to talk about their art and interact with like minded creatives. The Rockford Art Guild has continuously been in existence since then. They have had small groups, like the first few years, but have also had up to 70 plus artists before Covid. Generally, they have around 50 artists, meeting once a month, to talk, give advice, share their thoughts about art and exchange ideas and creative processes. Atwork by the following artists will be on display; Timothy Griffith, Deb Sherman, Jill Martin-Golden, Cindy Bear, Don Hyson, Cora Hutchison, David VanDeLinder, and Dennis Dargel. The Sveum Gallery is sponsored by Senz Redieske Insurance Agency in memory of Mark Senz. Nancy Mayhew will be the featured artist in the Bell Gallery. Nancy teaches mosaic classes at the art center along with Qigong and Tai Chi. The Bell Gallery is sponsored by Daley Murphy Wisch and Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium. “As a cancer survivor and artist, I know firsthand the benefits of art therapy. When you are creating a work of art you are leaving a piece of yourself in this world. You get lost in the creative process and all your worries go away. You also get to meet people going through similar challenges.” Looking for more art in the community? In the Sveum Gallery, MIDWEST DARKNESS will be featured. Dark Art is an umbrella term used to describe a large catalog of material, including, but not limited to, the dark side of the creative process: skulls, demons, and otherworldly creatures. It also features biomechanical, bioorganic, portraits, and impossibly alien-type landscapes, to name a few. As far as the medium of work represented by the eleven artists in this exhibit, it is a mixed bag from traditional mediums like paint and photography to organic materials. JR Broshous, Adem Redzepi, Casey Ball, Ian Currey, Matt Lombard, Matthew Wajek, Paul Lesch, Riley Hill, W. Hagskins, Stonevein Studio, and Rotted Dystopia are the featured artists. As artists of the dark, we do not always work with darker subject matter. But we find interest in dark art due to past hardships or loss, or we find it interesting and intrigued by it. We feel this form of expression through dark art and surrealism shines a positive light through darker images. People tend to want to see art as pretty, something you see on the walls of a doctor's office or in fancy restaurants. We want to show the community that dark art can be thoughtful and positive and that the people who create it are not dark by nature but very enlightened people who dare to use their craft and talents to provoke thought. A NOTE TO PATRONS: We acknowledge that some of the images presented in the MIDWEST DARKNESS Exhibition may not be suitable for all audiences and may evoke discomfort. However, the Art Center is committed to providing a platform for diverse forms of artistic expression within our community. We believe in giving a voice to many types of art and recognize that art can provoke thought, dialogue, and reflection. We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to engage with the works in a manner that respects both the artists and your own comfort levels. In the Bell Gallery, works by Paul Kopp will be on display. Kopp holds an MFA in poetry from Vermont College of Fine Arts. His work was selected for the 2022 Beloit and Vicinity Show at the Wright Museum of Art at Beloit College, has been included in group shows at Side Street Arts and Beloit Art Center, and is represented in private collections throughout the United States. He lives in Wisconsin with his wife and two rescue dogs.
