Beloit Art Center Announces Classes for Young and Old

Beloit Art Center is pleased to announce its classes and workshops for all ages. A full line-up of courses for kids and teens is being offered this summer, beginning with painting classes in June followed by pottery, mosaic, papermaking, and more in July. Starting the week of June 12th and running for three weeks with sessions in the morning and the afternoon. For the younger artists (ages 9-13) weekly instruction in cartooning and acrylic painting is available on Tuesdays. For teens (ages 14+) classes in watercolor and acrylic painting are being offered on Thursdays. To see the full listing of summer courses for kids and teens visit www.beloitartcenter.com

Nancy Mayhew is back from Florida and ready to teach at the art center.  The Mosaic Mania drop-in workshop that meets weekly from 10:00 a.m. – noon on Tuesdays will continue only through May. It costs $20 plus supplies. A new 5-session evening Mosaic Mania Class will be starting on May 9. It will be held on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-8:30 and costs $175. Students of all skill levels are welcome and can work on any project of their choice. On Monday evenings beginning May 15, Nancy will be offering a 3-session class to create mosaic pots. The class will start at 5:30 and costs $80.

Pottery classes at the art center are wildly popular! A 6-week course in hand-building techniques or a six-week course in throwing on the potter’s wheel will be offered. Pottery classes are taught by Rebecca Rehpohl. All skill levels are welcome, and creativity is encouraged. Clay and glaze will be provided. In hand-building techniques, students will explore the world of hand-building with clay. Fundamental construction strategies will be covered. The hand-building course will be held on Thursday evenings from 5:30-8:00 pm beginning on May 25. In throwing on the potter’s wheel, students will begin to explore the world of throwing clay. Starting with cups and goblets, students will develop the skills to throw bowls. The throwing course will be held on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-8:00 pm beginning on May 23. The cost for either course is $155.00. In both classes, students will learn glazing methods needed to finish their unique creations and returning or experienced students will be guided into advanced projects and methods when ready after a review of fundamental strategies.

Qigong for fall prevention & better balance in the art gallery is back! Join certified Qigong instructor Nancy Mayhew on Mondays and Wednesdays in the main gallery to improve muscle tone, flexibility, balance, and coordination. The one-hour classes will begin at 10:00 am starting May 8th. Punch cards are available for $50.00 for 6 sessions or drop in anytime for $10.

Spring is here and the Beloit Art Center is pleased to announce a full line-up of classes and workshops for the month of April.

For those interested in pottery, the art center has options for you! A 6-week course in hand-building techniques or a six-week course in throwing on the potter’s wheel will be offered. Pottery classes are taught by Rebecca Rehpohl who joins the Art Center with 38 years of experience as a public-school teacher and 22 years as a community education art teacher. All skill levels are welcome, and creativity is encouraged. Clay and glaze will be provided. In Handbuilding Techniques, students will explore the world of hand-building with clay. Fundamental construction strategies will be covered. The handbuilding course will be held on Thursday evenings from 5:30-8:00 pm beginning on April 13. ​Every Tuesday, local award-winning mosaic artist Cheryl Kitzman, will be hosting Mosaic Mania. The workshop meets weekly from 10:00 a.m. – noon and again in the evening from 5:30-7:30pm. Mosaic Mania is a drop-in class and costs $20 plus supplies. Students of all skill levels are welcome and can work on any project of their choice.

​Instructor Anna Banwell will be hosting two unique workshops in April. On April 15, she is offering a Planted Succulent Class. Attendees will create a medium-sized succulent plant arrangement in a handmade ceramic planter created by the instructor. Everything is included, so just come and join the fun. The class will be from noon until 2:00 and the cost is $60.00. Beginning April 29, Anna is hosting a 3-week Altered Book Workshop. Students will learn how to change a gently used book into an altered book art journal. The class will be held from noon to 3:00 pm each Saturday. The cost is $120.00 and includes supplies.

​Join instructor Katie Swanson on Saturday, April 22 from 1pm - 3pm for her Brushstroke Workshop. Spend the afternoon learning about different brushstrokes and brushes used in painting. The cost is $40 and supplies will be provided.

​For photography enthusiasts of all skill levels, the art center is offering a Photography Club. This group is for anyone interested in connecting with fellow photography enthusiasts, sharing their work, learning and exploring new photographic techniques, and collaborating on group photographic projects. Photography Club meets monthly, and the next gathering is on April 12. The group will be traveling to the Nygren Wetlands for a group shoot. Email info@beloitartcenter.com for details. ​If you are feeling a bit bored with winter the Beloit Art Center is pleased to announce their class offerings for the month of March. The Art Center will be offering classes in photography, watercolor techniques, pottery, and mosaic art or check out one of the groups. The art center would like to help you discover your creativity within.
​Beginning March 7, local award-winning mosaic artist, Cheryl Kitzman, will be hosing Mosaic Mania. ​Feel more like painting? Join instructor Katie Swanson on Saturday, March 11 from 1pm - 4pm for her Watercolor Techniques Workshop. Spend the afternoon experimenting with different techniques used with and to enhance watercolor painting. Some of the topics include gessoing, splattering, alcohol ink, tissue paper, wax resist, in drawing, dribbling, salt, wash/dropping, saran wrap, various brushes, sgraffito, paper towel, and masking. The cost is $40 and supplies will be provided.

​For anyone interested in photography the art center has two choices. Introduction to Digital Photography II will be offered starting March 20 at 5:30 p.m. The class will allow beginners to continue to develop their photographic skills. After an initial review of exposure, we will explore light. We will discuss and work with both natural and artificial light and we’ll learn to effectively use and control the light in a scene. Classes will be held on Mondays through April 3 and the cost is $60.00. Introduction to Digital Photography II will be taught by Jo Christofferson, a New York Institute of Photography graduate, and a retired Blackhawk Technical College Instructor.

The class will be held on Wednesday, March 22 from 5:30-7:30 pm and using hand building techniques students will create a one-of-a kind woven spring basket. No previous experience is needed.  Come and have a fun and creative time. The cost for the workshop is $40.00 and includes materials. Pottery Classes are taught by Rebecca Repohl. Rebecca joins the Art Center with 38 years of experience as a public-school teacher and 22 years as a community education art teacher.

​Looking to try something creative in the new year?  Beloit Art Center is currently accepting entries for the Annual Juried Photography Exhibit, which will be held in March.  Enter up to three images for consideration. With no theme this year, now is the time to look back through your gallery for your best photos from the past. ​​PHOTOGRAPHY
If you aren’t ready to enter a photo contest but would like to learn more about photography we have two options.  The first is our upcoming Intro to Digital Photography I class starting February 6th at 5:30 pm. This 4-week class will help you be confident with the use of your digital camera.  In addition to the class, instructor Jo Christofferson runs a monthly Photo Club. This group meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 6 – 8 pm. Topics vary, and member input is highly encouraged.

POTTERY
Things are coming together nicely with the BAC pottery program! Thursday, January 26 from 5:30 – 7:30 join instructor Rebecca Repohl to create a heart shaped rosebud vase. The cost is $40 and your project will be done in time for gift giving to your Valentine!

How about Drawing? On Saturday, February 11th, join instructor Anna Eckel for a Charcoal Still Life Drawing Workshop – Inspired by Georgia O’Keefe from 9am – Noon. The cost is $40 and includes supplies.

​OPEN STUDIO
Are you an artist and want to connect with other?  Join the Thursday Night Open Studio Art Group to learn, share and be inspired. Led by Mariclare Sheil, this group works independently and has a short educational program related to various elements of the artistic process. Drop-in when you can for $7 a session. The group meets each Thursday starting at 5:30 and running until 7:30.

Beloit Art Center is pleased to offer new classes and events in the new year.  Entries for the annual juried photography exhibit are now open. A new Intro to Digital Photography I will also be starting in early February.  The Rosebud pottery workshop is a one session class being held in late January, with projects done in time for Valentines Day, and on February 11 a charcoal still life workshop is planned.  For more information and to register for classes visit the classes & events tab to the left.
