Beloit Art Center is pleased to announce the June exhibits which will open with a First Friday Gallery Reception on June 7th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A gallery talk featuring the artists will be held at 6:00 p.m. Both exhibits will be open through June 27th. Thank you to our June show sponsor, 5Bar, for their generous support of this exhibit. The Los Alacranes food truck will be at this First Friday reception.
In the Sveum Gallery, MIDWEST DARKNESS will be featured. Dark Art is an umbrella term used to describe a large catalog of material, including, but not limited to, the dark side of the creative process: skulls, demons, and otherworldly creatures. It also features biomechanical, bioorganic, portraits, and impossibly alien-type landscapes, to name a few. As far as the medium of work represented by the eleven artists in this exhibit, it is a mixed bag from traditional mediums like paint and photography to organic materials. JR Broshous, Adem Redzepi, Casey Ball, Ian Currey, Matt Lombard, Matthew Wajek, Paul Lesch, Riley Hill, W. Hagskins, Stonevein Studio, and Rotted Dystopia are the featured artists.
As artists of the dark, we do not always work with darker subject matter. But we find interest in dark art due to past hardships or loss, or we find it interesting and intrigued by it. We feel this form of expression through dark art and surrealism shines a positive light through darker images. People tend to want to see art as pretty, something you see on the walls of a doctor's office or in fancy restaurants. We want to show the community that dark art can be thoughtful and positive and that the people who create it are not dark by nature but very enlightened people who dare to use their craft and talents to provoke thought.

In the Bell Gallery, works by Paul Kopp will be on display. Kopp holds an MFA in poetry from Vermont College of Fine Arts. His work was selected for the 2022 Beloit and Vicinity Show at the Wright Museum of Art at Beloit College, has been included in group shows at Side Street Arts and Beloit Art Center, and is represented in private collections throughout the United States. He lives in Wisconsin with his wife and two rescue dogs.

Beginner Throwing on the Potter’s Wheel will be held Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. from June 4th through July 16th (no class the week of July 4th). Students new to wheel throwing or wanting to brush up their skills will begin to explore the world of throwing on the potter’s wheel. Students will learn glazing methods needed to finish their unique pots. This class is taught by Rebecca Rehpohl. The $140 cost includes clay and glaze. Students will need to provide their own tools, apron, and hand towel. Sets of pottery tools are available for purchase in the BAC Gift Shop. Class size is limited to 7 students, age 17+.
Hand Building Pottery Class will be held Thursdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. from June 6th through July 18th (no class the week of July 4th). Students will explore the world of handbuilding with clay. We will examine fundamental construction strategies including pinch, coil, and slab in this six-week class. Students will learn glazing methods needed to finish their unique pots. This class is taught by Rebecca Rehpohl. All skill levels are welcome. Creativity will be encouraged. The $165 cost includes clay and glaze. Students will need to provide their own tools, apron, and hand towel. Sets of pottery tools are available for purchase in the BAC Gift Shop. Pre-registration is required and class size is limited to 8 students, ages 17+.
Fundamentals of Acrylic Painting with artist David Ruhe, Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, starts June 15th and runs through July 27th (no class on July 6th). In this class designed for beginners to intermediate artists, David will guide participants through creating artwork in acrylic. In addition to the class cost, participants will need to purchase their supplies including a sketchbook, basic paints, brushes, and canvas.
Mosaic Mania Workshop will be held Tuesdays June 18th through July 23rd from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Learn how to create beautiful mosaic pieces in this fun six-week class. Each week Nancy Mayhew will guide you in how to design, cut, and place pieces for the project of your choice. The $150 fee covers use of classroom, cutting tools, grinding wheels, and instruction. Beginners are welcome and will be guided on the supplies to buy.
Qigong in the Art Gallery with Nancy Mayhew, will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. beginning April 29th. Qigong is traditional Chinese medicine and involves using exercise to optimize energy with the mind, body, and spirit to improve and maintain health and well-being. The cost is $50 for a 6-session punchcard - drop in when it works best for your schedule.

The Beloit Art Center is pleased to present the 15th Annual High Schools Art Exhibit. A First Friday Gallery Reception will be held on April 5 th from 5 – 7 p.m. Students, parents, teachers, and administrators, as well as the public are encouraged to attend to see the collective talent of the young artists in Beloit. Participating schools are Beloit Turner, Beloit Memorial, Rock County Christian, and The Lincoln Academy. The exhibit highlights artwork ranging from painting, digitalart, mixed media, pottery, sculpture, and stained glass. Several pieces will be selected to represent Beloit in the Association of Wisconsin Artists (AWA) Statewide Teen WRAP program. The work chosen will be exhibited and published at the Pyle Center on the UW Madison campus this August.
Thank you to our April show sponsor, ABC Supply Company, for their generous support of this exhibit and the youth in Beloit. The exhibit will be open through April 25 th .
Join us for Beyond BIFF free events at Beloit Art Center on Saturday April 13th, featuring live pottery demonstrations and live painting demonstrations by Cheria Gillespie. The gallery will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The cost is $165 and clay and glaze will be provided.

More than 66 images will be exhibited during the month of March at the Beloit Art Centers 13th annual juried photography contest. On Friday, March 1, the Center will host a First Friday Gallery Reception from 5-7pm, with an awards ceremony beginning at 6pm. This month’s exhibit is sponsored by Alongi Santas Moss Insurance Agency.
Amateur photographers from the region submitted images to be reviewed by a group of three jurors. Each individually reviews the digital entries and gives them a score based on composition, creative and subject matter, and technical merit. The three scores are then tallied, determining the images that are accepted into the exhibit. The final in-person juror critique occurs after the images are delivered to the
gallery. The results are kept under wraps until the night of the reception, at which time the top ten awards are presented, with the first-place award winner receiving $150, second place $100 and third place $50. A theme for next year’s exhibit will also be announced. The exhibit will be open for viewing from March 3 through
March 28.

The $100 fee covers the use of classroom space, cutting tools, grinding wheels, and instruction as needed. Beginners are welcome and will be guided on the supplies to buy (not included in the club price) to create their own project.
Intro to Digital Photography four-week class Mondays from March 25th through April 22nd from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This course is for those with any type of digital camera who want to get out of Auto and start unleashing the creative potential of their camera. Students will learn how to utilize shutter speed, aperture, and ISO to control exposure and explore how aperture and shutter speed can be used creatively. They will also learn how cameras meter the light in a scene and the options cameras give us to achieve the best focus. Bring your camera and camera manual. The cost for this class is $80.

Beloit Art Center is pleased to announce the February exhibits which will open with a First Friday Gallery Reception on February 2nd from 5-7pm. A gallery talk featuring the artists will be held at 6 pm. Both exhibits will be open through February 22. In recognition of Black History Month, please join us as we celebrate the work of Danny Burks and Cheria Giles.
In the Sveum Gallery, we welcome Danny Burks, a longtime resident of Rockford, Illinois. His method of woodworking is called intarsia, which uses varied shapes, sizes, and species of wood fitted together to create mosaic-like pictures with an illusion of depth. The colors in the wood are all natural, not stained.. Always sketching as a youngster he remembers “clearly how excited I was when my mom
purchased me a tabletop easel. Both of my parents supported me in my art. My father was blind, so he could not see the pieces, but he could feel the wood.”
In the Bell Gallery, welcome Cheria Giles. Cheria Cheria Gillespie, an artist based out of Beloit, has always been drawn to the arts. Some of her earliest memories are of drawing cartoon characters from her favorite TV shows. Most of her art has that fantastical element to it, reminiscent of how she saw the world when she was younger. More recently she has taken a dive into the digital art world.

The Sveum Gallery Presents Daniel Burks
In the Sveum Gallery, we welcome Daniel Burks a Rockford based artist born in 1961. Burks has been painting and creating art using many different mediums all his life. After his tour in the US Navy, Daniel became a career HVAC Mechanic. Now retired, he is perfecting the art of Intarsia.

""My name is Cheria Gillespie, and I'm an artist based out of Beloit Wisconsin. I’ve always been drawn to the arts. Some of my earliest memories are of me drawing the cartoon characters from my favorite TV shows. I loved the Teen Tiitans and Courage The Cowardly Dog and I just remember sitting for hours trying to perfect their image in my notepad. During my school years, art class was always where I felt most at ease. I was able to create my own little world through the images that I’d come up with. As I grew, my focus on art diminished greatly. The realities of the real world began to occupy all of my free time and I completely forgot about my love for this talent I once had. But then the pandemic hit, and the world was changing around me, and suddenly I had nothing but time to think about life, about its meaning and what I wanted out of it. So I ordered a paint set online and decided to give art a try again. Soon I began filling all of my free time cultivating this skill that I forgot all about. And just like that, whenever I picked up a paintbrush, I was back in my own little world like when I was a kid. A lot of my art has that fantastical element to it, reminiscent of how I saw the world when I was younger. Everything was colorful. Sometimes I didn't understand why or what I was seeing, but I was always curious, and I try to keep that curiosity alive in my paintings through my use of color. I don't believe in having only one art style. I think if we have this chance to explore all things, then why not?"
"Last year I decided to start taking my art more seriously, taking on commissions and diving into the digital art world. Creating prints of my work and custom art tote bags. I was also given an opportunity at 5BAR here in Beloit as a live painter. Every Thursday I start with a blank canvas and complete a painting live for the bar patrons. I’ve also had some of my work displayed at 317 Art Collaborative in Rockford, and now the Beloit Art Center. I almost can't believe my love of art was something that I forgot about for so many years."

Beloit Art Center is pleased to announce the January exhibits which will open with a First Friday Gallery Reception on January 5th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A gallery talk featuring the artists will be held at 6:00 p.m. Both exhibits will be open through the end of January.
In the Sveum Gallery, we welcome Judith Meyer who was born in Detroit, Michigan. Throughout her childhood and her years at universities, Judith studied different cultures, corresponded with people in Indonesia, The UK, France and Uruguay. “I loved all aspects of these endeavors. I developed an open mind to different ways of thinking, believing, seeing and living. My work, though sometimes not readily apparent, reflects all these experiences as well as how I regard those people who come into my life. Without knowing it, this became a gift that I gave to myself.” Her work centers around her life and global events, stories, myths and personal beliefs. This allows her to have a wide palette from which to move and has inspired her work in many ways over the decades.
In the Bell Gallery, we welcome Michael Contreras. Michael has always been fascinated with the creative process. Most of his work is in photography, and graphic design, but he has been working on a painting work-flow that he can stay curious about. “Most of my creative work is driven by that curious feeling. “Where can we go from here?” “What can we make now?”. It’s always been a priority for me to hold on to that curious feeling over anything else.” He finds himself thinking about painting in terms of concept, iconography, text, and aesthetics.

Beginners Throwing on the Potter’s Wheel. A six week class held Tuesdays from January 9th through February 13th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The cost is $140; clay and glaze will be provided. Students will need to provide their own tools, apron and hand towel. Sets of pottery tools are available for purchase in the BAC Gift Shop. Students new to wheel throwing or wanting to brush up their skills will begin to explore the world of throwing on the potter’s wheel in this introductory class. Class size is limited to 7 students, age 17+. Pre-registration is required by visiting www.beloitartcenter.com/classes
Intermediate Throwing on the Potter’s Wheel. A six week class held Tuesdays from January 9th through February 13th from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. The cost is $165; clay and glaze will be provided. Students will need to provide their own tools, apron and hand towel. Sets of pottery tools are available for purchase in the BAC Gift Shop. This is an intermediate wheel-throwing class. In order to enroll in this class, students must have taken a pottery class at the BAC after January 2023, be able to confidently center and raise a cylinder, and have received approval from the instructor. A four week class held Mondays on January 15th, 29th, and February 12th, and 26th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This course is for those with any type of digital camera who want to get out of Auto and start unleashing the creative potential of their camera. We will learn how to utilize shutter speed, aperture, and ISO to control exposure and explore how aperture and shutter speed can be used creatively. The cost is $80. Beloit Art Center Announces WRAP Winners, January 2024 Photography Class, and Call for photographers for the March Juried Photo Exhibit
Beloit Art Center is excited to announce the State Event Award Winners and Honorable Mention Award Winners.
WRAP originated in 1940 as an outreach program of UW-Madison and is now administered by the Association of Wisconsin Artists (AWA). WRAP encourages nonprofessional, student, and emerging artists to create and exhibit their work across Wisconsin. It is for people who have a serious interest in creating art. Each location coordinates a juror, who gives critiques and awards at the local workshops. These events also include an art demonstration or lecture. The top one third of artwork advances to the state exhibit, which will be held at the Pyle Center in Madison in August 2024.

This community event gives amateur photographers from the area the opportunity to have their work displayed in a gallery. Juried by a panel of three judges, the top submissions will be displayed in the gallery and awards will be presented on March 1, 2024 during the First Friday Gallery Reception beginning at 5:00 pm. Registration for the Juried Photography Exhibit and submission of images can be done online at www.beloitartcenter.com and is open until January 28, 2024 (by 2pm).
