Beloit Art Center is pleased to announce the June exhibits which will open with a First Friday Gallery Reception on June 2 from 5-7pm.  A gallery talk featuring the artists will be held at 6 pm.  Both exhibits will be open through May 25th.

In the Sveum Gallery, we welcome Janesville artist Kurt Buggs. Kurt is a graphic designer, sign maker, and nature painter.  He has been the major supplier of interior signage for Famous Dave’s restaurants nationwide since 2001. He is a member of the Janesville Art League, a Friend of Hedberg Library, and the Wisconsin Society of Ornithology. He is also a founding member and past president of the Blackhawk Chapter of Trout’s Unlimited. He has also been involved with the group that facilitated Janesville becoming a Bird City.

In the Bell Gallery, we are pleased to feature Robin Russart. Robin’s common theme in her art is the upcycling of used materials. She has worked in fiber and textiles as a weaver, and more recently with paper, using old magazines and other periodicals to create art. Travel has fueled Robin’s sense of creativity. Living throughout the United States and Singapore for three years she traveled extensively and saw art and architecture that has inspired her artwork. Robin notes that people are intrigued by her current artwork and love the fact that it is created from items that have been discarded.

Be sure to stop by the Beloit Public Library before the end of June to see the current exhibit by John Hines, resident artist of the Beloit Art Center.  John Hines is self-taught and was born and raised in Beloit. Most of his art instruction has come from reading books, taking online classes, and working with the Beloit Art Center Thursday night open studio artist group. In 2022 John was commissioned by the City of Beloit to paint the USS Beloit for the dedication ceremony commemorating the combat ship. John has won several awards regionally and his piece Time with Dad, received a 2021 state award from the Association of Wisconsin Artists. His exhibit at BPL will be open through June.

Calling young artists! Beloit Art Center is offering summer classes for students ages 8 – 18. Back by popular demand, Lynette Redner will be teaching classes in cartooning, watercolor, and acrylic painting. Pottery instructor Rebecca Rehpohl will be teaching pottery classes for teens. Anna Banwell will be offering a variety of one-day workshops including papermaking, felting, and creating a recycled art journal. Nancy Mayhew will return again this summer with two mosaic classes for kids. Visit www.beloitartcenter.com/summer-classes-for-students.html for all of the offerings and how to sign up.

Summer classes for adults are also being offered.  A new session of Introduction to Digital Photography will begin July 5th.  Summer is a great time to enhance your photographic skills and this class will teach you how.  Ongoing Qigong classes are happening this summer. Let by Nancy Mayhew, qigong is a Chinese exercise to optimize energy within the body and maintain good health. It is excellent for balance, flexibility, and coordination.  Held twice a week, students receive a punch card and can attend when it is best for their schedule.  For more about classes please visit the BAC website.

Keep your eye open for butterflies downtown!  This spring Beloit Art Center announced the 2023 BUTTERFLY BELOIT Fundraiser. Community artists will be turning in their butterflies by May 31st. Once photographed, the butterflies will be distributed in business downtown Beloit, including The Villager, Walnut Creek and Bagels and More.  They will be up for viewing until a silent auction which will be held in early July.  Watch the Beloit Art Center website and Facebook page for the important dates.

Beloit Art Center is the community’s connection to the visual arts.  The gallery is free and open to the public. BAC is located at 520 E. Grand Ave. in downtown Beloit. Gallery and gift shop hours are Monday 10am – 2pm, Tuesday – Friday 10am – 5pm and Saturday 10am – 2pm.
